Lt. Ehren K. Watada's case has been declared a mistrial and it looks like that means that it is over. Read about it at http://www.couragetoresist.org/x/.
Lt. Watada should be in jail. That is where he belongs. Firstly, He knew what he was signing up for when he accepted a commission in the Army. Second, once he accepted a commission he swore an oath to follow the orders of the President and those appointed over him, therefor it was his sworn duty to deploy with his unit. Since when do soldiers get to choose their missions? He made his choice when he VOLUNTEERED to join the army, after that it is academic. He always has the choice to disobey unlawful orders but what is unlawful about the war in Iraq? Notice I have not made any moral judgements about the war. there is a big difference between unlawful and immoral. One is legal and one is conscience. He should have fully examined his conscience prior to joining the army. People should never forget that there is not a single military member in the US armed forces who was compelled to join. The draft ended over 30 years ago. I repeat, Watada disobeyed a lawful order and endangered his fellow soldiers by refusing to deploy and deserves to be in jail.
